PRIVACY
What we collect and why
oildebt.ca is a standalone investigative site. We do not run any third-party analytics, trackers, advertising scripts, or fingerprinting tools. The page loads the same way whether you arrive through a search engine, a shared link, or a bookmark, and nothing on the page reports your reading behavior to anyone.
Open letter signatures
When you sign the open letter, we store your name, email address, postal code, derived province, and optional comment. We use these to assemble the delivered letter to MPs and MLAs. We also store a salted SHA-256 hash of your IP address and a truncated user-agent string, used solely for spam detection. We do not store your raw IP address.
Newsletter
If you subscribe to updates, we store your email address, the exact consent sentence shown at signup, a hashed IP address, and a permanent unsubscribe token. The unsubscribe token is a long random string included in every email we send. Clicking it removes you from the list immediately, with no login required.
Tips and leaks
Tips sent to [email protected] go through standard email infrastructure. Email is not anonymous. For sensitive tips, create a free Proton Mail account and send from there, or contact us from a public Wi-Fi network. We do not log tip metadata beyond what the receiving mail server retains for delivery.
Retention and deletion
Signatures are retained indefinitely so that the delivered letter remains verifiable. Subscribers are retained until they unsubscribe, at which point the row is marked unsubscribed but the email is retained to honor the unsubscribe if someone tries to re-add the address. To request deletion of your signature or subscription, email [email protected] from the address you signed with.
MP lookup
The postal-code lookup for your MP and MLA runs against the free Represent API by OpenNorth. We proxy the request through our server so the third-party origin does not appear in your browser's network tab. The postal code you enter is not stored.
